Branding Sextante

 

Sextante is the restaurant at Oz Hotel Collection Cartagena, a restaurant branding project inspired by the city’s maritime history and its connection to navigation, exploration, and the Caribbean Sea. The project began with brand strategy and the creation of the name. Sextante takes its name from the sextant, a navigational instrument historically used to determine position by observing celestial bodies. This idea of orientation and discovery became the conceptual foundation of the entire identity system. Based on this concept, we developed a visual identity that moves away from traditional gastronomic branding codes. Rather than depicting ingredients or dishes, the brand builds a visual universe of characters, jellyfish, and elements inspired by the maritime imagination. More than describing the food, the illustrations evoke the experience of sharing a meal by the sea. As part of the project, we designed a custom typeface inspired by historical documents preserved in Cartagena’s archives. This research process allowed us to recover references from the city’s graphic heritage and reinterpret them through a contemporary lens. The identity was extended across menus, coasters, napkins, and a variety of printed materials developed for the restaurant, creating a cohesive and recognizable visual system across every brand touchpoint.
